WHAT IS A PRESSURE GAUGE

A car pressure gauge is a device for measuring the pressure in car tires. In special equipment, gauges are routinely used to measure oil pressure and brake cylinders. Let’s take a closer look at tire pressure gauges.

During operation, vehicle tires lose pressure for various reasons, which leads to deterioration of driving performance and danger when driving. It is impossible to determine the pressure difference between the tires “by eye”, so we need a pressure gauge for accurate measurement.

What Does It Show And What Does It Measure?

A car pressure gauge is a pressure gauge that measures the air density inside a tire. Unit of measurement kgf / cm² or Bar (Bar). In addition, the measuring device can be used to measure the pressure in the air suspension cylinders. Ready-made pneumatic kits are often equipped with dial comparators of a KamAZ car, since it has a mechanical comparator that shows the pressure up to 10 atmospheres and is distinguished by the accuracy of the indicators. The principle of operation of a tire and air suspension pressure gauge is the same, as they work on the same principle.

What is a pressure gauge used for? Mainly for safety. In previous articles, we touched on the topic of tire pressure difference and what it brings (uneven tire wear, increased driving danger, increased fuel consumption). Often the device is integrated into a pump, be it mechanical or electrical, but in order to read the tire pressure, the pump must be firmly attached to the valve, which is completely inconvenient.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

The simplest mechanical pressure gauge consists of:

  • housing;
  • Bourdon tubes or membranes;
  • arrows;
  • tubes;

Operating Principle

The simplest mechanical pressure gauge works as follows: the main part is a Bourdon tube, which moves the needle when air pressure is generated. Connected to the valve, the air pressure acts on the brass tube, which tends to bend, so the other end of the tube acts on the rod, moving the arrow. A similar operating principle applies to the diaphragm pressure gauge.

An electronic pressure gauge is more complex, a sensitive element is used as a meter, the readings of which are transmitted to the electronic board, then to the display.

Types of Pressure Gauges

Today, there are three types of automotive pressure gaugesLinks to an external site.:

  • mechanic
  • rack and pinion

Mechanic. The peculiarity of such pressure gauges is their simple design and reliability. The cost of the device is low compared to rack and digital devices. The main benefit is an instant and accurate pressure reading, device availability (sold in every dealership) and reliability. The only drawback is the sensitivity to moisture.

Some mechanical gauges not only show the pressure, but allow excess air to be released to obtain the desired reading. For this, a pressure release button is located on the gauge tube.

It is recommended to buy more expensive models with a metal case, which are clear and correct in performance.

Rack. The body can be in plastic or metal, the fitting is integrated into the body or there is a hose of about 30 cm. The principle of operation is similar to a mechanical pressure gauge, the cost is the lowest, but the body is often susceptible to damage.

Digital. Convenient as it shows the pressure value to the hundredth. Differs in clearer readings, there is a display backlight, but in winter the device can give values with errors. The electronic pressure gauge is the most compact, but the plastic case requires careful use, otherwise there is a risk of crushing the case.

Advantages of Working With Pressure Gauges

What is a pressure gauge used for? First of all it is an indispensable assistant for every motorist, especially for those who often use the vehicle for driving on sand and off-road, where pressure relief or pumping is required.

How do you use a pressure gauge? Quite simply: you need to insert the fitting into the tire valve, after which the arrow of the device will show the real pressure. The digital device must first be turned on. By the way, in order not to constantly check the inflation of tires, there are special valves with pressure sensors. The simplest sensors are equipped with nipples with division into three colors: green – the pressure is normal, yellow – requires pumping, red – the wheel is flat.

There are also ready-made systems with an LCD display, installed in the cabin, which notifies 24/7, XNUMX days a XNUMX, the status of tire pressure. Most modern cars are already equipped with a standard tire pressure information system, and SUVs are equipped with the function of pumping or releasing pressure. One way or another, it is extremely important to have a pressure gauge with you, as correct tire pressure is the key to safe and comfortable driving.
